Day 1: Arrived in Bergen
  • We arrived in Bergen in the afternoon, picked up our rental car and headed into the city. We spent the afternoon walking around the city, checking out the historic Bryggen, small cafes and shops within the city center.
  • Later that evening, we checked into the Hotel Norge, conveniently located within walking distance to most restaurants, and grabbed dinner nearby. https://www.scandichotels.com/en/hotels/hotel-norge-by-scandic

Day 2: Left Bergen and drove to Sondalsfjora
  • We left Bergen early in the morning and made our way to Sondalsfjora where we’d be spending the next 3 nights. Along the way, we made stops at Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall, Skjervsfossen Waterfall, Bordalsgjelet Gorge, and Tvindefossen Waterfall.
  • In the evening, we made our way to Aurland for our fjord sauna experience. Here we enjoyed the view from a floating sauna and cooled off by jumping into the fjord. I definitely recommend doing this at least once on your trip. https://www.fjordsauna.com/.
  • After the sauna, we made our way to our Airbnb rental in Sondalsfjora at: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1134880676246647381?source_impression_id=p3_1758906338_P3Abse1paMB3cXi6q.

Day 3: Flam: Fjord cruise and railway trip
  • Today we spent nearly the entire day in Flam.  We had a boat cruise on the Naeroyfjord in the early morning and then a trip on the Flam Railway to Myrdal to view the stunning scenery of Western Norway.  *TIP If you aren’t taking the round trip back to Flam, try to sit on the Right Side of the train as it heads to Myrdal for the most beautiful views. There is also a stop and option to get off and see Kjosfossen up close before the train departs again.
  • In between our 2 excursions, we walked around the shops in Flam and then drove up to Stegastein Viewpoint for amazing views of Aurlandsfjord.

Day 4: Molden Day Hike and Urnes Stave Church
  • On this day, we decided to get out and do a bit of hiking. We chose the popular day hike to the Molden Summit, about a 5.2 mile round trip, with stunning views of Lustrafjord. Trip took about 3.5 hours.
  • Later in the afternoon, we took a ferry over to Ornes to visit and tour Urnes Stave Church, one of the oldest churches in Norway.

Day 5: Sondalsfjora to Stryn
  • We checked out of our airbnb in Sondalsfjora and began making our way to Stryn, stopping of for various views along the way.
  • We then detoured to Kjenndalsbreen, which is part of the Jostedalsbreen National Park, to get up close to the waterfall and glacier. TIP – this glacier was a lot less busy than Briksdalsbreen where most of the tour buses stop and has a pretty scenic drive to the viewpoint. Here we explored up close to the glacier and had the place nearly all to ourselves.
  • After spending time at the glacier, we made our way to Stryn to meet our Airbnb host where we’d be staying for the next 2 nights in a beautiful, private and relaxing little cabin. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/560666460967582029?source_impression_id=p3_1758932894_P3FDeTFtm-249Ena

Day 6: Geiranger
  • We left Stryn early in the AM and made our way to Geiranger where we’d spend the day in one of the most popular locations in Norway.
  • We took the extended boat cruise on Geirangerfjord with views of the iconic “Seven Sisters” waterfall and then walked around the city checking out the shops.
  • In the afternoon, we booked a 2 hour small e-car and drove around Geiranger talking in the views at Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen. https://emob.no/en/. Recommend booking this in advance if you’re interested. They have various time and route options available and have GPS programmed to lead you to the locations.

Day 7: Tackling Trollstigen
  • Today required a lot of driving. We checked out of our Airbnb in Stryn and made our way to Gudbrandsjuvet Cafe for some famous cinnamon buns before arriving at the Trollstigen Visitor Center. Due to the time of our visit, the cafe was closed but we were able to walk out to the viewing platform to see the corkscrew road below.
  • After leaving the visitor center, we then began the drive down the famous “Troll Ladder” road with steep inclines, narrow roads and 11 hairpin turns.
  • Our day ended at our new Airbnb for the next 2 nights in Vikebukt, in a Norwegian style boat house with great views of the mountains. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/689665143284738639?source_impression_id=p3_1758934303_P30y6Gwn5twCXp1X

Day 8: Trollkirka aka”Troll’s Church” hike
  • On this day, we took the ferry to Molde and prepared ourselves for a hike to the troll caves. This hike up is about 90 minutes all uphill, on some steep and rocky terrain, until you reach the first cave. Once there, you can navigate your way through the cave crossing over the marble and limestone, walking through water. There are a total of 3 caves here that you can enter at your own risk. If you choose to enter the cave, make sure you bring a flashlight and waterproof shoes and you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall inside.
Day 9: Vikebukt to Sunnfjord
  • This was our longest day driving. We checked out of our Airbnb early in the morning and drove to the west coast town of Alesund, known as the gateway to Geirangerfjord and for its art nouveau architectural style. Definitely a cute town that I wish we could have spent more time in.
  • While here, we walked around the city streets for a bit, and then visited the Sunnmøre Museum, an open-air museum with traditional old buildings and Viking-era ships that tell the story of the farming community.
  • After leaving the museum, we continued on our way down to Sunnfjord and checked into the Scandic Sunnfjord Hotel & Spa for the evening https://www.scandichotels.com/no/hotell/scandic-sunnfjord-hotel-spa.

Day 10: Sunnfjord to Bergen
  • Another long drive today had us checking out or our hotel early. Before leaving the area, we made a quick stop at Huldefossen Waterfall where we had the place to ourselves for a few quick pictures.
  • When we arrived in Bergen, we stopped to see and walk through the Fantoft Stave Church. *Note, this does cost money to view and parking can be a bit tricky.
  • We then dropped off our rental car, checked into Hotel No 13, https://www.hotelno13.com/ in the city center, and walked back to Bryggen to explore the shops and grab a bite to eat on this beautiful sunny afternoon.

Day 11: Bergen to Oslo via train
  • Another long day of travel was in store, except this day was spent taking the trail from Bergen to Oslo. This trip took about 7 hours through stunning Norwegian nature with views of the mountains, forests and waterfalls.
  • We arrived in Oslo in the late afternoon and checked into our hotel https://www.strawberryhotels.com/hotels/norway/oslo/clarion-hotel-the-hub/, conveniently located a short distance from the train station.
  • That afternoon and evening, we walked around the city a bit checking out some of the sites near the harbour promenade.

Day 12: Oslo
  • Today was spent exploring the city of Oslo. We jumped on the City Sightseeing Bus to get us around the city and take us to some of the top attractions.
  • We explored the Vigeland Sculpture Park, walked down the picturesque cobblestone streets of Telthusbakken and Damstredet, and went to the Norwegian Folk Museum https://norskfolkemuseum.no/. The Folk Museum is a massive open-air open-air museum with more than 150 buildings, relocated from rural towns and rural across Norway. Some of the buildings are even decorated from the 16th century and up until now. They also have the popular Gol Stave Church on site as well as indoor exhibits. Definitely a popular place to visit and spend hours walking through.
  • For our last evening in Norway we took in one last sauna visit at Salt https://www.salted.no/home-english. The place is pretty large and contains both private and shared sauna and cold plunge experiences, as well as food and music. With a great location overlooking the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum, this is a popular attraction for those looking to dabble in the sauna experience.
